24-25 Team Previews: Waubonsie Valley

***High school coaches can continue to fill out the Season Preview Form to provide information on their teams. This is not required to be featured, but it does help provide context to put together the previews.

Waubonsie Valley

Outlook:

Coming off of a historic 27-win season where the Warriors were one of the last remaining undefeated teams in the state, there is a lion’s share of production back for a group who should challenge for a sectional and beyond. Illinois State commit Tyreek Coleman had a huge junior season where he created at a high level while limiting turnovers and stepping up in big moments. He is one of the premier guard prospects in the state. 6-foot-5 senior Moses Wilson, a high-upside wing, is also back as a standout two-way player. His IQ, length, athleticism, and budding skill will take another big step this year.

Cade Valek (Alabama Huntsville soccer commit) was their sixth man last year and will have an elevated role using his 6-foot-7 frame and mobility to be a disruptor defensively and on the glass. Donovan Neal, a pace setter who can space off of the ball, and Josh Tinney, another multi-year role player, are both back for their senior seasons. 6-foot-2 Senior Tyus Payne will provide support in the frontcourt as well. Keep an eye on 6-foot-4 sophomore Kris Mporokoso, who impressed with the Illinois Wolves this summer and will be a valued shooter and scoring threat for them. Payne’s younger brother Kyler (6-foot-5) is another young piece to watch down the line, as the freshman has a good blend of size and skill already. Coach Schweitzer’s senior-heavy group will be one of the must-watch teams in the suburbs.

Prospect For College Coaches To Keep An Eye On:

Tyreek Coleman (6’2 PG, 2025) – Illinois State commit

Coleman stood out last season, putting the state on notice as a complete point guard capable of affecting games in a multitude of ways. Smooth and intelligent with the ball, Coleman gets to his spots well, can hit jumpers on the move, and has good touch on those tough, 8-to-12-foot floaters inside. He is a big recruit for the Redbirds, who haven’t brought in a local guard of Coleman’s caliber in some time. He is a darkhorse for Mr. Basketball.

Moses Wilson (6’5 SG, 2025)

Wilson, who recently picked up a D2 offer from Purdue Northwest, remains one of the best uncommitted prospects in the 2025 class. He emerged as a junior with impressive anticipation and recovery defensively while also possessing range, passing instincts, and showtime athleticism around the rim as a finisher. In the right situation, I think Wilson is a legitimate Division 1 prospect who will be a monster in a couple of years as he fills out. But for now, look for the 6-foot-5 wing to be a force for the Warriors.

Kris Mporokoso (6’4 SG/SF, 2027)

A lot can change between now and Mporokoso’s senior year, but as of right now, the length, shooting, and ever-improving athleticism of the sophomore stand out. Since the spring, he seemed to continue to grow both physically and from a feel standpoint, making sound decision and letting the game come to him. He’s got a chance to be one of the better wings in the class.
