Team Preview: Marmion

The Cadets bring back a strong returning core to a team that was relatively young a year ago in the Chicago Catholic League. Senior point guard Ali Tharwani (10.7 ppg) was one of the breakout players in the CCL last season, showing his ability to hit shots off of the dribble and create advantages consistently in space. He has garnered interest from several D3 programs and should have a big year. Junior guard Joey Kramer (10.5 ppg) is also back after shooting 40 percent from three last year. He is consistent, efficient, and provides an immediate spark for Marmion. Dave Malley (7.6 ppg) is also back after seeing good time as a sophomore. The quick, scoring guard hit 60 threes last season at a 38 percent clip.

I really like the impact that juniors Colin McEniry and Brendan Kavanaugh provide. Both multi-sport athletes, gained valuable experience as sophomores and bring a competitive edge to the team. McEniry, an all-CCL football player, has good length around 6-foot-4 with long arms and good instincts as a rebounder, defender, and cutter/slasher. Kavanaugh, also a promising baseball player, is a well-built wing who provides toughness and rugged defense. Marmion also has a solid group of newcomers, including sophomore Frankie Duarte, an attacking lefty guard who should be a nice player in the CCL, and Ben Piekarz, a junior guard who was a standout at the sophomore level last year. They will have some added frontcourt depth with Lucas Quitno (6-foot-5) and Nick Proctor (6-foot-3), and could get some shooting help from senior Billy Reynolds. Juniors Max Ulbrich, Jamin Berman, and Henry Miller are all entering their first varsity seasons as well for a young yet fairly experienced Cadet team.
