The toughest week to narrow down the players of the week is always the holiday tournament week. With that being said, here are the players of the week from a busy week of games.
Braylon Roman (Senior Guard, Normal)
Roman was the catalyst for Normal at the State Farm Holiday Classic, leading both with his scoring and playmaking. His body control at 6-foot-5 and court vision is something you don’t often see from a bigger guard at the high school level. He was named to the all-tournament team.
Bryce Heard (Junior Guard, Homewood Flossmoor)
In the highly-competitive Big Dipper tournament, Heard won MVP after filling up the stat sheet for HF. He stepped up in a matchup with Thornton and Illinois signee Morez Johnson, scoring a team-high 19 points in a game that ended on a game-winning layup. Heard continues to look like one of the best two-guards in Illinos.
Carlos Harris (Senior Guard, Curie)
Pontiac is one of the most historical tournaments in the country, and Harris left a lasting impression. The senior guard scored 22 twice yesterday to guide Curie over two strong teams in New Trier and Benet. His late-game heroics at the foul line kept them in the game to get to double overtime against Benet before ultimately winning in the final period. UIC is getting a good one.
Davion Thompson (Freshman Guard, Bolingbrook)
Throughout the Jack Tosh tournament, Thompson looked like a seasoned vet. The smooth lefty efficiently manufactured shots throughout the week and was a standout in a tough matchup with Metamora in the title game, scoring 31 points. Thompson averaged over 20 points a game on the week.
Jaxson Davis (Freshman Guard, Warren)
Davis took home the MVP of the Proviso West tournament after dropping an impressive 36 points to go along with five assists in the championship game. He has continued to lead Warren to one of their best starts in school history by making others around him better and still managing to average nearly 20 points a game as a freshman.
Jaylan McElroy (Senior Forward, DePaul Prep)
DePaul Prep remained undefeated in part because of the dominant two-way showings from McElroy at the Hinsdale Central tournament. He garnered tournament MVP honors with a nice blend of finishing, rebounding, and shutdown defense. Still uncommitted, McElroy is among the best remaining forwards in the senior class.
Jehvion Starwood (Senior Guard, Oswego East)
Starwood put up a tournament record 37 points in a win against a Brother Rice team that has been one of the most consistent all season. The Wolfpack took third place in a strong field of teams as a result of his performance that game, but he was also solid all week averaging 18.8 points and 5.5 rebounds. Starwood is committed to Wyoming.
Larenz Walters (Senior Guard, Kankakee)
Walters repeated as the tournament of the Kankakee Holiday Tournament, beating a very good Lindblom team. He had 20 points in the title game, continuing what has been a dominant season for the senior guard. While Walters is uncommitted at the moment, his shot-making, passing ability, and general toughness should attract plenty of suitors over the next few months.
Luke Kinkade (Senior Guard, Neuqua Valley)
It was an efficient, effective week at the Wheeling tournament for Kinkade, who dropped 25 points in the championship game. Neuqua was able to lean on his shot-making and playmaking throughout the week to continue their momentum heading into the new year. He won MVP of the tournament and is still being pursued by college programs across levels.
Tyler Mason (Senior Guard, Metamora)
Mason was terrific during the week, showing up on multiple occasions when he was needed most. He won tournament MVP of a Jack Tosh tournament that features dozens of Division 1 and Division 2 level players, averaging 19.0 points and 6.2 rebounds per game for the tournament champions. The Winona State commit is a no-question All-State player who is only going to get better as this team continues to gel.
