DePaul Prep
Outlook:
The reigning 3A champions (and back-to-back state champs after winning 2A in 2023) have a lot to look forward to this year. This may be one of Coach Kleinschmidt’s most offensively talented group, which is ominous news for the rest of the state after dealing with stifling defense from the Rams over the last few years. The defensive discipline will still be a key feature, but the offensive upside is immense. Western Illinois commit Makai Kvamme is among the top true point guards in the state with a proven record of staying composed in high-pressure moments. 6-foot-8 junior Rashaun Porter should have a monster year after making serious strides with his frame, footwork, and skillet. His motor and athleticism stand out, but the well-rounded game on both ends is drawing more Division 1 interest. Junior AJ Chambers has impressed this fall and should take a huge jump. After playing a complimentary role as a sophomore, the tough-minded guard has a combination of handle, speed, passing ability, and a flat-out dog mentality that will stand out.
Rob Walls, a coveted D3 recruit, is an excellent defender who is back for year three along with 6-foot-6 forward Jonas Johnson, who adds another element stretching the floor when at full strength. A newcomer to keep an eye on is transfer Rykan Woo, a savvy, quick playmaker who fit in well over the summer. He’s a low-maintenance, high-production guard who can shake defenders or knock down outside shots. Another Division 1 prospect. Oberlin commit Gus Donahue will give size and shooting on the wing. 6-foot-7 sophomore Gus Johnson has a ton of upside with his perimeter skill and 6-foot-3 freshman Blake Choice is one of the more mature, explosive 2028s that doesn’t get talked about enough. DePaul Prep has a very tough schedule but should once again have a high-character, high-energy group that will be a difficult out if their defense remains elite.

Prospects For College Coaches To Keep An Eye On:
Rashaun Porter (6’8 PF, 2026)
Porter has an old-school type of physicality inside, as both a finisher and rebounder. The athleticism and body control separate him, but he made huge strides defensively during his sophomore season and has become increasingly confident as a jump shooter. He’s got the ball-handling ability to add value on the wing as well at the next level. Porter is one of the safest forward prospects in the class and a no-doubt Division 1 prospect with multiple offers already.
Makai Kvamme (6’2 PG, 2025) – Western Illinois commit
Kvamme was one of the stars of the state tournament last year with a number of big time performances to lead the Rams. His passing and decision making have been excellent for three years, but he has become a bit more assertive as a scorer as well. Western Illinois prioritized adding the steady PG who should once again be a driving force.
Rykan Woo (6’1 PG, 2026)
Woo has started to gain some traction from Division 1 programs and for good reason. He has speed, elite IQ and feel, a crisp handle, and shooting ability that extends past the college line. Woo is also able and willing to apply ball pressure and compete to get stops. After a strong summer with the Rams, expect for that momentum to continue into the winter.
Rob Walls (6’0, 2025)
I love to watch players who take pride in their defensive impact and Walls does that about as well as any guard in the Catholic League. The relentless guard is strong and quick laterally to cut guys off and pick up in the full court. He picks his spots offensively and is the type of dribble penetrator that can collapse the defense on command. Multiple high-level D3 programs have offered Walls to this point.
AJ Chambers (6’0 PG, 2026)
Winners translate. Chambers finds ways to will hos team to success, whether that is with crafty passes, aggressive drives, or lock down one-on-one defense. His jumper has progressed and he is a solid spot-up threat as well. What Chambers may lack in height he makes up for with heart and competitivess. I would expect a number of D2 and D3 programs to be keeping an eye on his development this year.
Gus Donahue (6’4 SG/SF, 2025) – Oberlin commit
After learning the last few years behind some talented teammates, Donahue will have a chance to make an impact in his senior year. A sharpshooter with a strong frame on the wing, Donahue will be a solid floor spacer to open things up for the Rams. After attracting varied D3 interest, Donahue committed to Oberlin a few months ago.
